The card magic performed everywhere today has a starting point, and it is a man in Vienna. Hofzinser was not a professional conjurer. He held another job and built an art of cards in small rooms.

Key achievements

  1. Born and died in Vienna.
  2. He was not a professional conjurer; he performed alongside other work.
  3. Regarded as among the most brilliant inventors of small manipulative pieces, especially with playing cards.
  4. Called the Father of Card Magic by the leading figures of modern card work.
  5. Performed in salons rather than large theatres, establishing an early model for close-quarters work.

Not a profession

Hofzinser was born in Vienna on 19 June 1806 and died there on 11 March 1875.

The first thing to record about him is that he was not a professional conjurer. He performed while holding other employment.

That fact shaped the character of his work. He had no large theatre to fill, no tour to run, no obligation to perform nightly. What he had instead was the freedom to make only what satisfied him.

The salon

He performed in salons rather than theatres.

A salon in nineteenth-century Vienna meant a small gathering, often in a private house — a few dozen people, a few metres between performer and audience. That is where he did his card work.

This is an unusually early establishment of the close-quarters form. Dai Vernon would settle close-up magic as an art at the Magic Castle roughly ninety years later.

Hofzinser had built the model already, in mid-nineteenth-century Vienna.

The Father of Card Magic

He is regarded as among the most brilliant inventors of small manipulative pieces, particularly with playing cards.

The leading figures of modern card work call him the Father of Card Magic — a title conferred by later generations, not one he claimed.

Which means his standing was established through long re-examination by his own profession. More than a century after his death, people studying technique are still citing his name.

Just as Dai Vernon dug through old literature to test what his predecessors had done, Hofzinser’s own work has gone on being reread by those who followed.

In the lineage

The line of card magic runs roughly like this.

Hofzinser (1806–1875) built the model; in the twentieth century Dai Vernon systematised and taught it; from there modern close-up spread outward. Shin Lim reaching a world stage in the twenty-first century with one deck of cards sits at the end of the same line.

A single pack of cards, sustaining an art for two hundred years.

What Hofzinser demonstrated is that having few props does not mean having little to say.

Notable works

  • A large body of invented card material
  • The salon model of close-quarters performance

Chronology

Only years that could be verified are listed.

  1. 1806 Born in Vienna on 19 June
  2. 1875 Dies in Vienna on 11 March

What to watch for

  • Watch how far a single deck can be taken. Fewer props does not mean a narrower range.
  • Work made for a small room is designed differently from work made for a theatre. Keep the distance in mind.
  • Worth telling children — he invented card magic two hundred years ago.

We never explain the secrets

You will not find any explanation of how a trick works on this site. Being astonished without knowing is the whole value of the art.
