No large apparatus and no patter. Cards in the hands and a piece of music. On that alone, one performer reached the top of a mass television talent contest. Shin Lim shows how far close-up magic has come.

Starting at sixteen

Shin Lim was born on 25 September 1991 in Vancouver, British Columbia. He was raised in Singapore and moved with his family to Massachusetts at eleven.

He took up magic at sixteen, after his brother showed him a single card sleight.

The fact is worth recording. Most of the performers in this archive began as children — Copperfield at ten, Shimada at fifteen, Tenkatsu entering Tenichi’s school at nine. Sixteen is not an early start in this field.

2012, sixth place

In 2012, during a break from his studies, he competed at the FISM world championship and finished sixth.

The following year an agent who had seen him there offered him a tour in China. A world championship is a place where performers are ranked, and also a place where they are found.

2015, world champion

In 2015 he became FISM world champion in close-up card magic.

Sixth place to first in three years. The title brought him a headliner slot at the Rio in Las Vegas and a great many engagements across the United States.

This is the point that matters. He can look like someone who appeared from nowhere on television in 2018. In fact he had already won a world championship judged by specialists. He had the profession’s verdict before he had the public’s.

2018, to the top with cards

In 2018 he won season 13 of America’s Got Talent as a close-up magician.

That is more surprising than it sounds. Formats of this kind reward spectacle legible from the back of a large hall — singing, dancing, acrobatics. He entered with the smallest discipline available and won it.

The following year he won AGT: The Champions as well, the only act to take both in consecutive order.

In Cardini’s line

His act uses no dialogue and moves with the music. The form has a precedent almost a century old — the silent act established by Cardini in the 1920s.

What Shin Lim did was connect that older style to contemporary card magic and to contemporary camerawork. It is one complete answer to the problem of showing an arm’s-length art through a lens.

Las Vegas

From 2019 he has headlined the Las Vegas residency LIMITLESS, which moved in 2024 to the Palazzo Theatre at the Venetian Resort.

Where magic is now

Magic began in the great nineteenth-century theatres, passed through the age of television, and has come back into the hands.

Thurston needed eight railway cars. Shin Lim needs one deck of cards. The audience reacts exactly as it did a century ago.

His success suggests that what audiences want was never the size of the machinery. What matters is the fact that it is happening right in front of you.

Notable works

  • The Las Vegas residency LIMITLESS (from 2019)
  • FISM world champion in close-up card magic (2015)
  • A wordless style of card magic performed to music

What to watch for

  • Card magic is not tame because it is small. Being small means there is nowhere to hide.
  • Watch how the work fits the music. In a wordless act, the score does the talking.
  • Worth sharing with children — all of this comes out of a single deck of cards.
  • It is never too late to begin. He started at sixteen.
