Sendai in August — festivals and days out with kids
August in Sendai means Tanabata. From the 6th to the 8th, enormous paper streamers hang the length of the covered arcades in the centre of the city, and more than two million people come to see them. This guide covers those three days and the rest of the month, and shows how to build a day that still works when you have children with you.
In August, the heat decides your day
For the three days of Tanabata the arcades fill up. The streamers themselves hang under cover, so you are out of the direct sun, but walking through crowds all day with children is harder than adults tend to remember.
Every itinerary below is built around the same idea: put an hour of sitting down into the middle of the day, on purpose. Rest that is left until “whenever we need it” usually arrives too late, around the point where everyone has run out of energy. Planning it in gets you further.
The Tanabata dates never move
Sendai keeps to the old lunar-solar calendar for this festival, so it falls on 6–8 August every year. In 2026 that is Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
One detail is worth getting right, because it decides which show you can book. Of those three days, only Saturday the 8th has daytime shows at Magic Lumiere. The 6th and 7th are weekdays, which means a single show at 19:00. The table below sets out each date.
If loud noises are difficult
The fireworks are on the evening of the 5th. Not every child is comfortable with the bangs and the crowds, and festival season tends to narrow the options for families in that position. There are places to sit quietly indoors instead. You do not have to build the day around fireworks.

Suggested days out
8 August (Sat)
Tanabata Saturday
Families with small children who are not sure they can walk through the crowds and heat all day
Of the three festival days, Saturday the 8th is the only one with daytime shows. Slotting an hour indoors, sitting down and out of the heat, is what makes the rest of the day possible with young children.
- 10:00 Arrive at Sendai Station; the streamers start right outside The arcades are covered, so you are out of the sun
- 11:00 Walk on into the Ichibancho arcade
- 11:30 Arrive at Magic Lumiere 7 minutes from Kotodai-koen Station. Doors open at 11:00
- 12:00 The show (about an hour) Sit down, cool off, and eat while you watch
- 13:15 On to Kotodai Park and Jozenji-dori
- 15:00 Take the hottest part of the day indoors Sendai Mediatheque and other indoor spots are close by
- 17:00 Back to the arcades once it cools down
- 19:00 Dinner
Tanabata evening (6 and 7 August)
With school-age children. These are weekdays, so the only Lumiere show is at 19:00
The 6th and 7th are weekdays, so 19:00 is the only show. The late afternoon is cooler for walking, so see the streamers first and go on to the show. With pre-school children, the Saturday daytime show is the easier choice.
- 16:00 Walk the arcades and see the streamers
- 18:00 Doors open at Magic Lumiere
- 19:00 The show (about an hour)
- 20:15 Walk back along Jozenji-dori in the evening
5 August (Wed)
Fireworks night — and another way to spend it (5 August)
Families with a child who finds loud noises or big crowds hard
The fireworks run from 19:30 to 20:30, overlapping the 19:00 show — so if you are going to watch them, come to Lumiere on another day. But not every child is comfortable with loud bangs and crowds, and festival season can leave those families short of options. Spending this evening indoors with a magic show is a perfectly good alternative.
- 18:00 Doors open at Magic Lumiere
- 19:00 The show (about an hour) Indoors, where the noise is not an issue
A summer weekend — aquarium, then magic
Families out for a summer weekend
Do the outdoor part in the morning, and be indoors for the hottest part of the afternoon. With the 15:00 show there is still dinner ahead, so order lightly here.
- 09:30 Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium The summer study programme is on
- 13:00 Lunch
- 14:30 Arrive at Magic Lumiere The candy-floss drinks can be made without alcohol, so everyone can order the same thing
- 15:00 The show (about an hour)
- 16:15 Souvenir shopping in Ichibancho
- 18:30 Dinner — grilled beef tongue, perhaps
Three generations at Obon (13–16 August)
Grandparents, parents and children together for the holiday
When three generations are together, somewhere everyone can enjoy from the same table is surprisingly hard to find. There is no age restriction here, there is a children's plate, and it is all seated — which matters for grandparents. The 12:00 show doubles as lunch.
- 11:30 Arrive at Magic Lumiere
- 12:00 The show (about an hour), with lunch
- 13:15 A short walk in Kotodai Park or Ichibancho
Check before you go
- The hours when the streamers are up, and where the festival square is
- Viewing areas for the fireworks, whether paid seating exists, and the rain date
- Holiday opening hours at the aquarium and the zoo during Obon (13–16 August)
- Whether Magic Lumiere runs the weekend schedule on 11 August (Mountain Day) and during Obon
